In Venice we stayed at the Starhotels Splendid Suisse, located halfway between Piazza San Marco (St. Mark?s Square) and the Rialto Bridge, which made for a nice leisurely walk to either of these landmarks. While in Venice we did the usually touristy things, San Marco, Rialto, shopping, a gondola ride, etc. However, it was when we strolled off the beaten path a few times and walked through the winding side streets within the maze of canals that we were able to catch glimpses of the real Venice. It is when you are away from the mass of tourists that you can truly notice and appreciate the architecture and observe the lifestyle of the dwindling population of real Venetians. We also had one of the most memorable meals of the trip, at Da Fiore Restaurant, on one of these out of the way streets.
