If somebody put a gun to my head and asked what was my favorite of the big three cites we visited, Rome, Florence or Venice (and that is the only way you could get me to choose one by the way), I think I would have to say Rome. I can’t quite put my finger on why though. I think it has to do with the central contradiction of Rome being a huge metropolitan city with cars congesting the streets and Vespas whizzing about, yet populated by citizens unaffected by the chaos around them. Never hurried, they linger at cafes and stroll down the Via Veneto, embracing La Dolce Vita, the sweet life. We were not there long before we fell right in with the pace, walking to our favorite café, Ciampini every day, sitting with our espressos and watching the people go by, in no particular hurry. Even when we were at places like the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain that were mobbed by tourists like us, we barely noticed them and managed to relax and enjoy it.
